Is polystyrene (Styrofoam) collected at the Public Works Yard?: Yes! There is a large container clearly marked for the collection of polystyrene. All polystyrene must be white, clean, and dry. Not accepted are egg containers, parking peanuts, materials that have tape, stickers, or cardboard attached, and any items that are wrapped in plastic or paper.

1. What is Single Stream recycling?: Single Stream recycling allows residents to put all recyclable materials in the same bin at the curb. This includes plastics 1-5 and 7, glass, bi-metal and aluminum cans, cardboard, and mixed paper. To ensure that your recycling is collected properly, please place items in a clearly-marked recycling bin. Items should be placed loosely in the bin, with no plastic bags, and must be clean and dry. Single Stream recycling stickers can be picked up at the Dept. of Public Works and Town Hall.

2. Am I required to recycle?: Yes! The New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act of 1987 mandated that municipalities adopt a mandatory source separation and recycling ordinance. It also required counties to develop their own recycling plans. Essex County Solid Waste Management Plan (2006)

3. Which recyclables are accepted curbside?: •Plastics 1, 2 and 5 •Glass •Bi-metal and aluminum cans •Corrugated (cardboard) •Mixed paper. View disposal instructions for common household items by using the Recycle Coach web application.

4. If the material contains food, can I still recycle it?: No. Recycled materials must be clean and dry, with no food scraps. Materials that contain food will be turned away at the Waste Management municipal recycling facility in Newark, where Millburn’s recyclable materials are sent.

5. Which items cannot be collected Single Stream at the curb?: •Commercial or bulky waste •Grocery bags •Polystyrene (Styrofoam) – but can be recycled at the Public Works Yard •Plastic wrap, film plastics, and cellophane •Plastic bags •Food waste •Vegetative waste •Paper/foam plates and cups, tissues, paper towels •CFC-containing appliances •Electric scrap, such as alkaline batteries and light bulbs

6. Does the Public Works Yard accept recyclables?: All Single Stream recyclables must be collected at the curb, but some other recyclable materials can be brought to the Yard:
• E-cycling (computers, televisions, cell phones, etc.)
• Polystyrene (Styrofoam-must be clean and dry. No packing peanuts)
• Tires
• Used engine oil
• Clothing
• Herbaceous waste

9. How should my recyclables be prepared at the curb?: Items should be placed loosely in the bin, with no plastic bags, and must be clean and dry. Single Stream recycling stickers can be picked up at the Dept. of Public Works and Town Hall. Blue or otherwise-designated recycling bins should be used to clearly distinguish recycled goods from ordinary household waste.
